Plot Analysis

  1. The novel opens with Amir as a grown man reflecting on his childhood. Provide a detailed description of the opening scene of the novel.

– The opening scene of the kite runner is a moment in Amir’s life where he gets a phone call from one of his father’s most beloved friends, also a father figure for Amir as a child. Rahim Khan phones Amir saying that he is very ill and while he was on the phone he said: “There is a way to be good again.”

– The opening scene of the kite runner, a realization in Amir’s life that you can’t cover up the past and forgetting it is nearly impossible it comes with a quote “There is a way to be good again.”  He recollects on the day that his friend Hassan was raped on a cold winter day in Kabul, and his father’s friend calls him bringing back up the past to have him redeem himself for his sins. This scene is significant because it brings Amir to a point in his life where he realizes he must redeem himself, and where he begins his adventure to finally became a man who can stand up for himself and others, and transform from a coward to a brave human

2. The novel ends with Amir and Sohrab in the park together. Provide a detailed description of the final scene of the novel.

The Kite Runner’s ending offers the first glimmer of hope for Amir and Sohrab. While at a gathering of Afghans at an American park, Sohrab (who hasn’t spoken in months) helps Amir kite-fight and even smiles when Amir offers to run the kite they defeated. Though Amir’s internal burden grew lighter after his cathartic fight with Assef, that moment did nothing for Sohrab, who remains a rape survivor and refugee of a war-torn country who does not fully trust his adopted family not to abandon him. Amir’s offer to run the fallen kite reflects his childhood friendship with Hassan, but significantly, Amir is now taking on Hassan’s role as the kite runner. Hassan’s childhood role was one of patience, service, and loving devotion. If Amir takes on these attributes with Sohrab, the reader has reason to hope that the future will be better for both and they can each move beyond the past that haunts them.

3. Reflect on Hosseini’s intentions when framing the novel like this. Consider how the novels key themes are established and developed by these scenes. Reflect on the position the reader is placed in by Hosseini’s deliberate framing of the text in this way.

– Hosseini started the book in the present, this was to prepare us for the Amir’s past that was coming with one sentence we already knew that we would either make us hate or feel bad from him “There is a way to be good again.” meaning he did something bad the question remains as to what he had done drawing us into wanting to read the book. we become so curious about the story that we can’t stop reading. which is exactly what Hosseini wants.

4. Describe three other scenes in the novel that you consider to be significant. Explain why these scenes are significant in regards to the development of character and theme development.

– One of the significant scenes would be when Hassan dreamed about the monster in the lake, the night before the kite fighting tournament. Hassan said that ”We were at  Lake…but no one was swimming because they said a monster had come to the lake. It was swimming at the bottom, waiting…So everyone is scared to get in the water, and suddenly you kick off your shoes, Amir aha, and take off your shirt. ‘There’s no monster,’ you say ‘I’ll show you all’…Everyone is screaming, ‘Get out! Get out!’ but we just swim in the cold water. We turn toward the shore and wave to the people…They see now. There is no monster, just water. They change the name of the lake after that and call it the ‘Lake of Amir and Hassan, Sultans of Kabul.’” Amir is showing everyone that it is fine to swim in the lake. After Amir betrays Hassan by watching him get raped, he starts to recall Hassan’s dream realizing that there was indeed a monster in the lake the monster being Amir. It symbolized Amir’s betrayal. “I thought about Hassan’s dream, the one about us swimming in the lake. There is no monster, he’d said, just water. Except he’d been wrong about that. There was a monster in the lake. It had grabbed Hassan by the ankles, dragged him to the murky bottom. I was that monster.” by amir running away when Hassan needed him that was him dragging Hassan to the bottom of the lake, The bottom of the lake represents the extent of Amir’s betrayal and how far he went in order to achieve what he wanted. this scene is significant because it showed us what extent Amir was willing to go to for his motives. Setting the book up for Amir’s future choices in life, showing us who he is.
